Summons/Juror Qualifications
Jurors are summoned randomly and are scheduled at the time of trial. Jurors serving at the Monroe Municipal Court are residents of the Monroe area (98272). Please read your juror summons for information detailing your jury service.
Per Washington State law (RCW 2.36.070), persons are qualified to serve as a juror if they are
- 18 years of age or older;
- Citizen of the United States;
- Resident of the county in which they have been summoned to serve;
- Able to communicate in the English language; or
- Not a convicted felon and have not had their civil rights restored.
Please understand that per Washington State law (RCW 2.36.170), it is a crime for any person summoned for jury duty to intentionally fail to appear as directed.
You can only be excused from jury duty for:
- Medical reasons
- Public necessity
- Undue hardship
- Dependent care
- Student status
- Military conflict
- Other reason deemed sufficient by the court
Please familiarize yourself with your employer’s responsibility to allow you to serve. Read RCW 2.36.135 – “Leave of absence from employment to be provided.”
Trial verification
To verify whether a trial is still scheduled and if you need to appear or not, please call (360) 863-4521 after 5 p.m. the day before your scheduled jury duty date for a recorded message. For example is you are summoned for a trial set on Thursday, call us after 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
