Shuairan “Maggie” Mei and Ye Ji Park are CIEE International Exchange Students at Monroe High School who decided it would be a good idea during their Spring Break, to volunteer for the Monroe Police Department and Monroe City Hall for their required Community Service obligation with CIEE. They are both required to do 20 hours of Community Service work, as a way to give back to the communities that they live, during their year of stay here. Both girls enjoyed the time they spent with Sherri Simonson and Kim Shaw. Maggie had such a great experience; she has decided to do more community service, this time at the YMCA. Maggie previously did a few hours of community service
at the Skykomish Food Bank and Ye Ji did all of her required hours at her host mom’s church, but wanted to do more, when this opportunity became available during their break. Maggie would love to work again at the Monroe Police Department.
Maggie’s host parents are Jari and Carol B.C. Honkanen of Snohomish. Ye Ji’s host mother is Peggy Clause of Monroe. Please contact either of them, if you would be interested in volunteering to be a Host Family for an International Exchange student. Anyone can participate; you need not have children to host a student. As a matter of fact, Maggie prefers to be an only child, since that is how she was raised in China. Other students enjoy having host brothers and sisters. And, some host families host more than one student. You can even host a student for a short period, to cover a host families’ vacation time, or be a welcome family, while CIEE is processing a permanent host family. Families are ALWAYS needed, prior to the new school year as well as during the school year. Feel free to call Carol @ 206-334-2553, if you are interested in being a Host Parent/Family. The experience of hosting an International student is very rewarding. Give it a try!
