S. Taft Sewer Replacement
Construction began May 3rd.
This project replaces the aging sewer main and water main under a portion of S. Taft Lane, beginning south of McDougall Street and ending at an existing manhole located approximately 300 feet north of McDougall Street. Associated side sewers and water services will be replaced. New side sewer cleanouts and water meter boxes will be installed within the City right-of-way. The alley and adjacent properties will be restored to existing conditions.
Every reasonable effort will be made to maintain property access during construction, however, at times there will be closures of the alley near your property/residence. The contractor will provide signage directing property owners and occupants to the nearest access points during construction and crews will also coordinate with residents to ensure free egress prior to the alley closure. The City is coordinating with Republic Services to maintain garbage, recycling, and yard waste pickup on Wednesdays. In order to have your garbage, recycling, and yard waste serviced, please put your containers on South Madison Street or South Blakely Street for the time being.
The project will require up to three scheduled potable water service shut downs, which will be directly coordinated with those affected customers prior to the service shutdown times.
Construction (May - June 2021)
Construction began May 3rd and should be complete by mid-June. The first water shutdown is scheduled for Monday May 10th. Residences that will be impacted received a Water Interruption Notice on May 6th (see image to the left).
Construction Preparations (April 2021)
The construction contract was awarded to D&G Backhoe, Inc. at the April 13th Council Meeting. A pre-construction meeting was held on April 20th with the City, contractor, and affected utilities.
Between April 19th and 30th, PSE is working along S. Taft Lane to relocate a gas main and reconnect residential gas services. This relocation work was required so the new sewer can be constructed.
Advertisement for Contractor Bids (March 2021)
This project was advertised for contractor bids on March 10th. The Engineer's probable cost opinion was $510,000. The bid open was held on March 25th with two bids submitted. D&G Backhoe, Inc. had the apparent low bid of $393,868.
The City has coordinated with gas and fiber utility owners to ensure their networks will not be in conflict with the proposed sewer and water improvements.
The topographic survey was completed in March and April. City Staff completed the proposed sewer and water design. The construction plans, project specifications, and Engineer's estimate are finalized.
