Starting July 1, 2023, any building or construction project in Washington State that is not already approved and exempt from certain regulations will need to meet new building codes. One of these codes is called the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) code, which requires certain fire protection standards for buildings that are located in areas close to wildlands or areas with flammable plant life that could cause wildfires. The WUI code also includes regulations for building materials and design features that help protect against fires caused by embers. A map produced by DNR (linked below) can help determine if a project needs to comply with the WUI code.
